Vlăhița Pass (Tolvajos-tető)

Vlăhița Pass is situated 36 km far from Odorheiu Secuiesc and 16 km from Miercurea-Ciuc along National Road 13A. Actually, it is the saddle separating the Central Harghita from the Southern Harghita and it is crossed by the highway connecting the two regions: the Odorhei country and the Ciucului Basin. From here we can approach the foot of the Harghita-Ciceu. Here at Vlăhița Pass, the Szeklers led by István, priest of Suseni defeated the army of János Zsigmond on Whit Saturday in 1567, thus defending their Catholic Church in the Ciucului and Giurgiului basins. The annual Pentecost Pilgrimage of Sumuleu is held in commemoration of this event.
